Bio
The music of Outer Surface feels like the memory of a dream—something elusive yet deeply familiar. Created by Gregory Kane (songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist), Outer Surface blends the cozy glow of indie rock with thoughtfully layered arrangements, creating immersive atmospheres where nostalgia meets emotional truth. Shades of Grandaddy, Wilco, and Guster ripple through shimmering guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and atmospheric keys, with harmonies and melodies that echo in your subconscious.
Kane first surfaced with Chicago’s indie favorite Plastics Hi-Fi in the late 1990s and early 2000s before disappearing into years abroad across Hong Kong, Indonesia, Germany, and the Netherlands. When he returned to California in 2021, he created a small producer’s workshop and studio where Outer Surface began to take shape.
Working from this space, songs are crafted by hand—layered guitars, vintage synths, vocals, and harmonic stacks—arranged and produced by Kane in Pasadena, then brought to life with live drums from Francesca Prattico in Naples, Italy. The upcoming single, Clouds Don’t Last (early 2026), was mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Clay Blair (Boulevard Recording).
Outer Surface sits with unresolved moments and feelings—regret and hope, memory and longing—carried by texture, atmosphere, and lyric. This isn’t music for a room full of people. It’s music for the space between your ribs: the place only headphones can reach.
